ABOUT DR PANOULAS

Clinical and academic experience

Dr Vasileios Panoulas is an experienced Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton and Harefield hospitals, where he treats private and NHS patients.

 

His main subspecialty interests include:

  1. Treatment of coronary artery disease (including complex percutaneous coronary interventions – PCI)

  2. Treatment of patients with acute or advanced heart failure with the use of temporary mechanical circulatory support (MCS)

  3. Treatment of aortic valve disease using the most uptodate transcatheter aortic valve interventions (TAVI)

Dr Panoulas  is a high volume operator undertaking over 350 PCI (stent) and over 70 (TAVI) procedures a year. So far in his career he has performed over 1300 PCIs and over 250 TAVIs

​

He has a busy academic portofolio with over 170 publications in peer reviewed journals and is associate editor and reviewer in several peer-reviewed cardiology journals 

​

After graduating with honours and several scholarships from the School of Medicine at the University of Ioannina, Greece, Dr Panoulas completed his PhD in genetic regulation of hypertenion in patients with rheumatoid arthritis at Russells Hall Hospital in Birmingham and the University of Ioannina for which he was award the Young Investigators award from the British Society of Rheumatology.

From 2008-10, he underwent his core medical training at Guys and St Thomas’ Hospital.

This was followed by his cardiology core training at Hammersmith Hospital where he was appointed as a National Heart and Lung Institute academic clinical fellow (2010-13).

​

He then undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship at San Raffaele Scientific Institute, Milan, Italy for a year (2013-14). He completed his MSc in interventional cardiology from Universita Vita-Salute San Raffaele, Milan, Italy.

Subsequently, he returned to London and was a North West London interventional fellow for two years at Hammersmith Hospital (2014-16). At this time, Dr Panoulas was a NIHR clinical lecturer in cardiology at the National Heart and Lung Institute, Imperial College London. He continues his academic work there now as an Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer.  

 

He was appointed as a Consultant Cardiologist at the Royal Brompton and Harefield NHS Foundation Trust In July 2016.
